RECORDS MANAGEMENT AT UNC-CHAPEL HILL
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a state agency, and its offices and departments are obligated to follow the requirements of the North Carolina Public Records Law (North Carolina General Statute 132) for retention and disposition of records. Oversight of University records retention and disposition began in 1992 after the Manuscripts Department received a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. The resulting records retention schedules govern the transfer of selected materials to the University Archives and ensure that the Archives receives records of enduring historical value.
To assist UNC-CH offices and departments, University Archives and Records Management Services offers the following services:
- consultations on creating and maintaining efficient record-keeping systems;
- school/department/unit records retention and disposition schedules;
- information and updates on records management issues;
- maintenance of a listserv for discussion among records management liaisons;
- training sessions on all aspects of records management;
