About the UNC-Chapel Hill Music Library
The UNC-Chapel Hill Music Library is regarded as one of the finest in
the nation and the largest research music collection in the South. Housed
in Wilson Library since 2003, it is the largest and busiest departmental
library on campus, holding more than 140,000 books and scores, 11,700
microforms, 43,000 audio and video recordings, and over 6,500 rare items.
The Music Library serves the classroom and research needs of the Department
of Music as well as users from a variety of other academic areas on campus.
In addition, we lend material and provide reference assistance to state- ,
nation-wide and international users.
During the academic year 2006-2007 the Music Library took part in a major
retrospective conversion project with OCLC in Dublin, OH to create online records
for about 30,000 items in the collection that had until now been
accessible only through the card catalogs. These include all our Dewey-classed
scores, microforms, rare materials, and LPs, as well as some serial and
book titles. We're not ready to say that "everything" in the Music Library
can be found in the online catalog, but we're much closer to that goal.
