Where can I find "stuff" for my class?

Microfilm, microfiche, and microcards: where are they and how do I use them and make copies?
- All music microfilm, microfiche, and microcards are kept in locked cabinets. Many of the Library's microfilm holdings have not yet been cataloged. Check the card catalog as well as the online catalog to find what you are looking for. You can also check the Uncataloged Microforms notebook located on top of the Song Index File (next to the Viewing Room) or under Local Databses on the Music Library's homepage (under "Music Resources"). Bring the call number to the Circulation Desk and the desk attendant will retrieve the item for you.
- You can read and copy microfilm and microfiche in the Microforms Room, to the right of the Circulation Desk. Copies are 25 cents each, or you may create and send digital files.
- Microcards must be checked out and taken over to Davis Library for viewing.
- Journals are the periodicals and magazines that the Music Library receives throughout the year. Recently received unbound issues are located in the west section of the stacks, near the glass room. They are arranged alphabetically by title. Past issues are bound by volume and shelved alphabetically by title in the Reference Room (titles beginning with letter A-O) or in the west section of the stacks (titles beginning with letters P-Z). .
Where are LPs (vinyl records) and how do I get them?

- Reserve material and sound recordings accrue overdue fines of $1 per hour. There is NO grace period for Reserve material or overdue sound and video recordings.
Can I take CDs out of the Library?
- Yes, however the borrowing periods remain in effect. Thus, non-affiliated borrowers may take CDs out of the Music Library, but they are still due in 2 hours. Most of the Undergraduate Library's Media Resources Center's Collection does circulate for one week outside of the Library.
Why can't I find this book/score/record/etc. in the online catalog?
- We are steadily making more of the Music Library's collection available online. If you don't find what you are looking for in the online catalog, be sure to check the appropriate card catalog, across from the Circulation Desk. Also check the various uncataloged materials notebooks located on top of the Song Index File (next to the Viewing Room). Remember, not all of our material is available online!
- You can renew material online from the Main Library's home page by clicking on "MyLibrary renew books" on the right-hand side of the page, or from the Music Library's home page by clicking on "Online Renewal" under "Services". Materials can be renewed three times. If your materials have already been renewed three times, you must bring them in to the Music Library to renew them!
What is the difference between my PID number and my PIN number?
- Your PID is your UNC OneCard Personal Identification Number. If you do not have a UNC OneCard, but have a library borrower's card, your PID is your library card number. Your PIN is a 4 digit number used, along with your PID to login to MyLibrary. If it is your first time logging in to MyLibrary, enter any 4 digits at the PIN prompt on this screen. Once you hit submit, you will be asked to reset your PIN to any 4 digit number. Type in the PIN you just entered in the first blank and the same (or a new) PIN in the second blank and hit submit, and your PIN will be set to the last PIN you entered. If you need to find your PID, use the PID On-Line Inquiry page.
Library Services
What if the materials I need aren't in any of the UNC Libraries?
- Books, scores, and journal articles that the UNC Library doesn't own can be requested through Interlibrary Loan. There are links on the Main Library's home page and Music Library's home page under "Services". If the libraries at Duke, NC State, NC Central, or UNC Greensboro have the material you need, you may also travel to their library to check the material out. You will need to register as a TRLN (Triangle Research Libraries Network) Borrower at the other library's circulation desk prior to checking out material.
- No. The equipment in the Listening Room is not set up to do this.
Can I check out books if I am not a student or affiliated with the university?
- All UNC-Chapel Hill students, faculty, and staff must use their UNC One Card as a library card. For all other patrons, library borrower's cards are available at the Davis Circulation Desk during all hours of operations. Card fees for North Carolina residents over agt 16 are $25 per year and $5 to replace lost cards.
How many items can I have checked out at one time?
- There is no limit on the number of regular circulating books and scores that you may have at one time, however both A/V materials (CDs, Videos, LPs, etc.) for non-affiliated borrowers and undergraduates and all Course Reserve materials are limited to two items at a time. The limit on CD checkout for Graduate students is 25 barcodes.
May I return Music Library items to any library on campus?
- You may return Music Library books and scores to any library on campus, however you must return all Music Library A/V items (CDs, Videos, LPs, etc.) directly to the Music Library.
Can I use the computers to write my paper? What about printing?
- All public computers are equipped with MS Office 2007. You may temporarily save your files to the My Documents folder on the D:\ drive but it gets erased each night. All the computers in the Music Library can print to the Pharos print station, located near the public photocopier. Printouts made from this station cost 10 cents per page and can be paid for with your UNC OneCard.
What if someone already has the item that I want?
- If the item that you want is checked out, you can use the online Request a Checked Out Item form under Services on the Music Library homepage or ask for a green Hold Request Card at the Circulation Desk. Fill it out completely and return it to the desk attendant. This will recall the item from the patron to whom it is currently checked out. You will be notified when the item is returned. All patrons are entitled to retain books and scores for 30 days before they are subject to recall. If the recall is placed after the patron has had the item 30 days, they will have two weeks to return it.
What if the online catalog says the book I want is available but it's not on the shelf?
- If you can't find the item on the shelf, check the shelving carts throughout the Library. It is possible that it has not yet been reshelved. If you still can't find it, ask for a brown Trace Request Card at the Circulation Desk. Fill it out completely and return it to the desk attendant. You will be notified when the status of the item has been determined.
Can I check my email in the Library?
- You can check your email at any of the public computers in the main lobby. However, if all of the terminals are full, you may be asked to stop so that patrons can use the online catalog.
What do I do if I need help answering a question or have a problem with my research paper?
- If you need help with finding information or with the collection, any of the full-time staff will be glad to assist you. Your tax dollars pay our salaries, so use us!
Can I recommend an item for purchase?
- Yes. Fill out a blue request card, located at the far end of the Circulation Desk, and leave it with with the desk attendant.
