Course Reserves Policies

blue square Definition -- Course reserves are items placed on the Reserve shelves in the Music Library by faculty members for use in class and are kept at the front desk so they are always available to the faculty member and his or her students. The Music Library generally has 1000-1500 items on Reserve each semester: books, scores, CDs, LPs, personal items, DVDs, videocassettes, etc.

blue square Procedure -- Well in advance of the beginning of each semester, the Circulation Supervisor sends out a memo asking faculty to submit Reserve lists by a certain date. The target date is August 1 for Fall Reserves, December 1 for Spring Reserves. Lists received by the target date are guaranteed to be processed by the first day of classes for that semester. Lists received after the target date are processed in the order in which they are received. Reserve lists should be submitted on the forms provided (Books & Scores, A/V material) by the Circulation Supervisor, with full call number, author/composer, and title information. Items to be added to Reserves after the beginning of the semester should be given directly to a staff person, NOT to the student worker at the Circulation Desk!

blue square Personal Copies -- Personal copies of material may be placed on Reserve. Be aware that placing any item on Reserve for class use subjects the item to a certain amount of wear and tear; all Reserve items, including personal copies, will be barcoded.

blue square Reserves Circulation -- Reserves circulate for 2 hours for in-library use. Printed material on Reserve (NOT sound and video recordings) may also be checked out overnight within 1 hour of closing time to be returned within the first hour the next day the library is open. Overdue items are billed at a rate of $1.00 per hour with no grace period and with a maximum fine of $50.00. Only two Reserve titles may circulate at one time to a borrower.
