Elizabeth College
Elizabeth College opened its doors in October 1897, in Charlotte, North Carolina. It was a four-year Lutheran institution for women. Citizens of Charlotte contributed money and land to build the College.  Photograph of the Conservatory

Elizabeth College featured a prominent music conservatory throughout its existence in North Carolina. In 1915 the College moved to Salem, Virginia, to merge with the Roanoke College for Women. The name “Elizabeth College” was retained. The College operated for a mere six years. In 1921 the building burned and was not rebuilt. After Elizabeth College moved, the Charlotte property became a Presbyterian hospital and other hospital buildings were erected around it. The hospital was torn down in 1980.
