Family History and Genealogy Resources in the North Carolina Collection

The North Carolina Collection has many resources and materials that will be useful to family historians and genealogists. The Collection seeks to acquire all published family and local histories related to North Carolina, as well as published vital records.

Online Catalog

The UNC Library's online catalog is the best place to start your search for materials on North Carolina families. Most (about 90%) of the holdings of the North Carolina Collection are cataloged online. To search for materials on a specific family, select a "subject" search and enter the last name, followed by the word "family." For example, Smith Family. To search for published vital records and indexes, enter the name of county you are researching, followed by the word "genealogy." For example, Bertie County (N.C.) -- Genealogy.

Clipping Files

For more than a half-century North Carolina Collection staff members have compiled and indexed articles from North Carolina newspapers, making a special effort to save significant obituaries and other stories about people. The clippings are bound and available for use in the NCC reading room. Indexes to most of the clippings are available on the newspaper clippings page on this website.

North Carolina Collection Biographical Index

The North Carolina Collection Biographical Index is a comprehensive index of names from over 500 books and journals containing biographical information on North Carolinians. Most of the materials listed in the index are available in the North Carolina Collection, or in other UNC libraries.

Census Records

The North Carolina Collection holds microfilm copies of the federal population census for North Carolina for the years 1790-1930, as well as several published indexes to census records.
