[Source Description: Judy Coonnard to Jeannette Conrad, 13 September 1870. North Carolina Collection, Wilson Library, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.] Columbis 13th Sept. 1870 Mrs. Jeannette Conrad Near Huntsville You will be surprised at hearing from me one of your old servants, as it has been 15 or 16 years since I came to Georgia. Tyre Glenn bought me at the sale & brought me to Georgia when I was purchased by Samuel Wilkinson & I lived with him until Freedom. I am now living with Mrs. Howard near the City & in good health & doing very well. You will much oblige me if you will write me & let me know when my Children are - they lived with Mr. Jerry Phillips - their names were John Armstead and Mary Anne. My husband's name was Armstead and if you know when he is he could tell me what has become of the Children. You must excuse my troubling You but I do want to Know so bad when my Children are. Do You Know anything about my [son?] Wm Perry - his Master moved to Rockford - he belonged to W. Phillips. Sister Priscilla & brother Jim might Know. Brother Tom Preer also. Arteway Preer the same. If You see Tom Preer his children Augustine & Henry are living near Indian Springs in this state. W.M. Thomas & Mr. Augustine Conrad might Know about my children. Mr. Trauser might know - so please inquire about it as I am very anxious to know. If You can find out please have it put out in the Church. Yours Very Respectfully, Judy Coonnard Notes: This letter may have been dictated and that could explain the spelling of personal names. "Columbis" is probably a misspelling of "Columbus." "Preer" may be "Puryear," as there was an African-American family of that name living in Stokes County. "Trauser" may be "Transou," as that name was common in the Stokes-Yadkin-Forsyth county area. |
