Yancey County
Big Tom Wilson stands beside the grave of Elisha Mitchell on Mount Mitchell in the 1890s. In 1857, Wilson discovered Mitchell's body after Mitchell fell to his death while exploring the mountain later named in his honor. The peak, at 6,684 ft. above sea level, is the highest mountain in eastern North America. Neg. 85-160.
