Provenance: Photographs were given by Pat Thomas of Chapel Hill, N. C. in November 1989 (accession no. 30378), and Mary Arthur Stoudemire of Chapel Hill in July 1994 (accession no. 30622).

Biographical Sketch: Adeline Denham McCall (1900-1989) of Chapel Hill, N. C. was a teacher of music and music appreciation. She had A. B. and M. A. degrees in music from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a teaching certificate from the Seymour School in New York City, attended Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, the Julliard School in New York City, and the Ecole Normale in Paris. She was born in Denver, Colorado.

McCall taught music-related workshops for school systems across the country. She taught music education and music history at Duke University, and served as music supervisor of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro schools for thirty years. At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill she taught music for students interested in early childhood education. She authored or coauthored several books and worked closely with the North Carolina Symphony in its outreach program.

Collection Description: The photographs in the collection relate to McCall's work with the North Carolina Symphony and the promotion of music in the public schools. The collection includes images of school children and school classrooms, including one photograph of African American children at the Orange County Training School.

Individuals pictured in the collection in addition to Adeline Denham McCall include her husband Fred McCall, Almonte Howell, Margaret Shaw, and Leonard Bernstein.
