Biographical Sketch: Rufus Morgan, a portrait and stereograph photographer, was born in Virginia in 1846 and died in California in 1880. He spent much of his adult life in North Carolina and operated studios at several places including New Bern, Goldsboro, and Raleigh. Morgan photography mostly in North Carolina, but also traveled to South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, New York, and California.
In 1873 Morgan married Mary Devereux Clarke (1854-1931) of New Bern. The couple had two children. Their daughter, Bayard Morgan Wootten (1875-1959), was one of North Carolina's most significant photographers of the twentieth century. Photographs of Rufus Morgan are filed in the Wootten-Moulton Collection (P11).
Collection Description: The Rufus Morgan Collection includes 266 individual stereographs, 316 stereographs mounted in an Illustrated Catalog of Southern Scenery by Rufus Morgan, several miscellaneous photographs including a print of the steamboat Neuse, an award won by Rufus Morgan for his stereographs at the North Carolina State Fair in 1873, a Rufus Morgan ledger book for 1873-74, and a folder printed at Morganton, N.C. in 1873 entitled Catalogue of Stereoscopic Views of Southern Scenery Published by Rufus Morgan (two-sided sheet: side one; side two).
