Biographical Sketch: Edwin Martin was raised in south Florida and resided in the Midwest before living in North Carolina from 1989 to 1997. He currently operates Lumiere Photographic Studio in Bangor, Maine.
Martin began making photographs in 1980, and his first extended photographic work focused on traveling circuses, a selection of which was published in 1988 under the title Mud Show: American Tent Circus Life (University of New Mexico Press). His North Carolina subjects include Harkers Island, tobacco farming, and Wake County historic buildings. Other subjects he has concentrated on include metropolitan life in New York and in Paris, people reading, night photography, and public posters. His work is included in collections such as that of the Ringling Museum of Art, the Mariners Museum (Norfolk, VA), the Museum of the City of New York, and, in North Carolina, the North Carolina Maritime Museum and the Ackland Art Museum.
