Biographical Sketches: C. Ford Peatross is Curator of the Center for Architecture, Design, and Engineering in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress and the Center for American Architecture, Design and Engineering. He was a former graduate student in the Department of Art at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Among his writings, Peatross co-authored William Nichols, Architect with Robert O. Mellown, published by the University of Alabama Art Gallery in 1979.
Born in Bath, England, William Nichols (1777?–1854) immigrated to New Bern, North Carolina in 1800 and established himself as an architect. He became the state architect or engineer for North Carolina (1817–1826), Alabama (1827–1833), Louisiana (1834–1835), and Mississippi (1836–1848).
Collection Description: The collection consists of 394 photographs made primarily by C. Ford Peatross intended as illustrations for a dissertation, which was never completed, on architect William Nichols. The photographic collection includes images made in England, Alabama, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. of structures designed by Nichol's or structures that influenced his work. The table below lists the structures in North Carolina, arranged by county.
