Abstract Edward Johnson McCauley (1926-2003) was a photojournalist and life-long resident of Burlington, N.C. He spent more than 20 years on the staff of the Burlington Daily Times-News, covering a wide variety of events in Burlington, across Alamance County, and in other parts of North Carolina. He was also a professional portrait photographer, photographic developer, and framer. The collection contains photographic material created by Edward J. McCauley between the years 1949 and 1974, mostly for the Burlington Daily Times-News, but also as a private photographer and developer (portraits, weddings and other events). Included are images of local, state, and national politicians and political events; news events; Burlington businesses; civic groups and other organizations; Alamance County schools; sporting events; and other images that document daily life in North Carolina. Most of the images are from Burlington and Alamance County, but many other North Carolina localities are also represented.

Edward Johnson McCauley was born in Burlington, N.C., in 1926. McCauley was a lifelong resident of Burlington, leaving only to join the United States Navy after graduating High School and to attend the University of North Carolina. As a young man, he was active in the Boy Scouts of America where he acquired an affinity for the outdoors, fishing, camping, hiking, and also picked up a hobby: photography. He graduated from Burlington High School in 1942 and joined the United States Navy in 1944 to serve in World War II. Because of his previous experience with photography, McCauley was chosen to attend the United States Navy Photography School in Pensacola, Fla.

It was during this time that he received formal training as a professional photographer. He served as an aerial photographer for the Navy during the war. He would later build on this education by attending Hugh Morton's Camera Clinics. After his service to the nation was complete and the war had ended, McCauley attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Communications in 1950. Starting in December of 1949, he began to take some photographs for his hometown newspaper, the Burlington Daily Times-News.

By January of 1950, he was hired as a full-time photographer, operator of the Fairchild Photo-Electric Engraving Machine (cutting edge equipment for the time that allowed newspapers to publish their own photographs the same day they were developed), and as a part-time Circulation Assistant. McCauley was employed as a photographer at the Burlington Daily Times-News for over 20 years, serving as Chief Photographer for much of that time. During the two decades that McCauley took pictures of Burlington and surrounding areas of Alamance County, McCauley captured with his camera some of the many changes and challenges that faced Burlington, North Carolina, and the United States during the 1950s-1970s. McCauley captured events in Burlington ranging from local news, sporting events, graduating classes, annual events (Christmas parade, Easter Egg Hunt, Fourth of July), organizations (Freemasons, Kiwanis Club, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, unions), churches, and local business. He married, raised two daughters, and was an active member in the Burlington community, especially as a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 721 and as member of First Presbyterian Church.

He retired from the Burlington Daily Times-News in 1974. He left the paper to pursue his work as a contract photographer, photographic developer, and framer, and to operate Ed McCauley Art Supply, a popular art supply store with his wife Aileen. McCauley died in 2003 at the age of 77 after fighting Parkinson's for several years.

This collection is comprised of approximately 77,000 photographic negatives and 7,500 photographic prints created by Edward McCauley both for the Burlington Daily Times-News and as a private photographer and developer, 1949-1974. Included are images of local, state, and national politicians and political events; news events; Burlington businesses; civic groups and other organizations; Alamance County schools; sporting events; and other images that document daily life in North Carolina. Most of the images are from Burlington and Alamance County, but many other North Carolina localities are also represented.

Arrangement: Subject/Chronological.

This series contains approximately 46,000 images taken for the Burlington Daily Times-News newspaper between December of 1949 and December of 1974. Edward McCauley was the photographer for the majority of the images in this series; however, the first subseries also contains images taken by other Burlington Daily Times-News photographers (1950-1957). A majority of the negatives in this series arrived grouped by year, which provided no identifying information. The collection processor created image descriptions for many of the materials in order to provide subject access to the materials. Due to the nature of newspapers and the editing process, many of the images in this series most likely were not used in publication. In many cases, only one image of an event to accompany an article may have been used from a series of photographs. Researchers are encouraged to use the Burlington Daily Times-News microfilm collection to determine more detail for many items in this subseries. Many images can also be identified when headlines are skimmed, even when there are no images accompanying the articles. There are portions of some subseries in this series that have not yet been fully processed; such sections have been noted when present. There are six subseries that make up this series: News / Events: 1950-1957 (1.1), News / Events: 1954-1962 (1.2), News / Events: 1963-1974 (1.3), News / Features: "Ask Andy" / "Seeing Double" (1.4), Beauty Pageants: Miss North Carolina / Miss Jordan Sellars (1.5), and "Special Negatives (1.6)."

Arrangement: Chronological.

McCauley took the images in the first subseries for the Burlington Daily Times-News between the years 1950 and 1974 using 4 inch x 5 inch sheet film. He took about 3/4 of the images in this subseries; however, it also contains the work of several other Burlington Daily Times-News staff photographers. Researchers interested in identifying photographers for specific images in this subseries can use the Burlington Daily Times-News microfilm to check credit lines. A majority of the negatives in this subseries had small pieces of paper attached to one corner with a number written on it, this numbering sequence has been preserved. A comparison of the first 1,171 negatives made during 1950 to the first four months of the newspaper for that year revealed that the assigned numbers follow a roughly chronological order. Images not used in publication were either multiple images from the same event or correspond to news items in the paper. Whenever possible, this finding aid provides the exact date and corresponding newspaper date (if used in publication). As mentioned in the series description, not all of the images were used in publication, but the Burlington Daily Times-News (microfilm) can provide clarity in many cases as to an event, date, or photographer. Two boxes of these materials arrived grouped by year (box one: 1950-1953, box two: 1954-1957, box three: 1958-1962, box four: 1963-1970) and the first two were stamped "Burlington Daily Times-News" on the outside of each large box. To date, only the years 1950-1955 have been processed and individual record exists for each negative within those years; the years 1956 through 1970 have not yet been processed. The naming schema assigned to materials in this subseries reflect the placement in the larger collection: In "P082_1.1_52_0001,""P082" represents the collection number, "1.1" indicates subseries one of series one, "52" indicates the year within series/subseries, and "001" indicates the placement of the item/envelope within the year. At the end of this subseries are images that have been processed from this series and are identified with the number 1.1_UP_XXX.

Clicking on these images will take researchers to items included in the Edward J.
