| Abstract | Elmer D. Johnson attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., from 1932 to 1951, receiving a BA (1936), MA (1942), and PhD (1951) all in history. Johnson did not take the images contained in this collection, but received them in 1942 from an unidentified fellow student who was leaving UNC to serve in World War II. The collection consists of 15 prints mounted in a small leather album and 12 loose photographs. Imprinted on the front of the album are the words "Snap Shots," and "Chapel Hill, N.C." (handwritten in pen). All of the photographs appear to have been made on the campus of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill between the years 1940 and 1942. Included are images of the Louis Round Wilson Library (exterior and interior), the Morehead-Patterson Memorial Bell Tower, South Building (exterior), Emerson Playing Field, and student Paul Hayes Etheridge Jr. in a Pettigrew Hall dorm room. |

Scope and Content
Collection contains 27 black-and-white photographic prints depicting buildings and grounds at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., during the early 1940s. Fifteen of the images are contained in a small leather covered album; the other 12 are stored in polyethylene sheets.There are a few individuals included in the images, but only one is identified. Included are images of the Louis Round Wilson Library (exterior and interior), the Morehead-Patterson Memorial Bell Tower, South Building, Emerson Playing Field, and student Paul Hayes Etheridge Jr. in his dorm room in Pettigrew Hall.
