Abstract John Wallace Winborne (1884-1966) was a graduate of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., and a justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court, 1937-1962, including serving as chief justice, 1956-1962. The collection includes photographs of John Wallace Winborne's student days at Horner Military Academy in Oxford, N.C.; the Bingham School in Asheville, N.C.; and the University of North Carolina, including photographs depicting sports, chiefly football and baseball. Also included are group or composite photographs of the North Carolina Supreme Court between 1937 and 1961; an autographed photograph of North Carolina Governor J. Melville Broughton; a photograph of a marker on Mount Mitchell, N.C.; and a photographic album containing portraits of the 1906 senior class at the University of North Carolina.

John Wallace Winborne (1884-1966) was a graduate of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and a justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court, 1937-1962, including service as chief justice, 1956-1962. Born in Chowan County, N.C., Winborne graduated from the University of North Carolina and moved to Marion in McDowell County, N.C., around 1910, where he joined the law firm of J. Will Pless. Winborne was a mason, rising to become grand master of the state Masonic Lodge, and was also politically active, serving as chair of the North Carolina Democratic Party.

The collection includes photographs of John Wallace Winborne's student days at Horner Military Academy in Oxford, N.C.; the Bingham School in Asheville, N.C.; and the University of North Carolina, including photographs depicting sports, chiefly football and baseball.
