An Introduction to Resources on the History of Native Americans in North CarolinaA Bibliography of Sources Available in the North Carolina Collection, Wilson Library, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill North Carolina Native American TribesThe state of North Carolina, through its Commission of Indian Affairs, recognizes eight Native American tribes in the state: the Coharie, based in Sampson and Hartnett Counties; the Eastern Band of Cherokee, in the far western section of the state; the Haliwa-Saponi, in Halifax and Warren Counties; the Indians of Person County; the Lumbee, in Robeson, Hoke, Scotland, and Cumberland Counties; the Meherrin, in Bertie and Gate Counties; the Waccamaw-Siouan, in Columbus and Bladen Counties; and the Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation, in Orange and Alamance Counties. This bibliography contains a list of materials in the North Carolina Collection on each tribe, including books, government reports, and journal and newspaper articles. Because extensive bibliographies for the Cherokee and the Lumbee have already been published, the North Carolina Collection does not attempt to list every available resource for these two tribes.
