Ocracoke Island, North Carolina:
A Research Guide
This guide is designed to facilitate access to information for individuals interested in Ocracoke Island, North Carolina. Ocracoke Island is a sandy strip located in the coastal barrier islands of North Carolina known as the Outer Banks and is part of Hyde County. The island boasts 14 miles of beaches protected by the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The village, which is comprised of approximately 775-800 acres, maintains a year-round population of roughly 800 people. The island has a K-12 school, a variety store, a gas station, a bank, a garage, and several restaurants and shops. There are no franchises on the island. It is accessible only by ferry. Originally relying on fishing for its economy, the island now relies mostly on tourism.
The island's isolation from the mainland has made it a point of interest to many for its history and beauty. The guide's intent is to point users to a variety of primary and secondary sources that will be useful for scholarly research as well as research fueled by personal interest. Most sources included in the guide pertain to historical issues and land development issues of Ocracoke Island. Researchers will not find information specifically geared toward tourism or planning a trip to Ocracoke, although some sources that address modern-day issues the island faces may include such information coincidentally.
Most sources included in the Research Guide are located at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The titles of sources listed that are held by UNC-CH will link directly to the catalog record, including the location(s) and call number(s) of the item. However, some useful sources that are not owned by UNC-CH are also listed. These resources will include a link at the bottom of the record by which university affiliates (students, faculty, staff, etc) may request the item through interlibrary loan.
Before getting started, please take a moment to read over: Using this guide and Research Tips.
This pathfinder was created by Laura Westmoreland, as part of a class project in Fall 2007.

Ocracoke has a rich history that has revolved largely around water, weather, and being isolated from the mainland. Its being an island has made its history distinct from other parts of North Carolina, and the fact that it is still only accessible by ferry makes its history quite unique even from the other islands that comprise the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The sources below provide general information about the island's history.
