This series was published irregularly for several years in the
magazine. The first installment, described in an editorial as
a "fore-runner" of the series, depicts life in the area
before UNC came. The first of the regular series (the second listed
above) describes early professors. The second (incorrectly numbered
the third in its title) tells of the cultural life of early Chapel
Hill. The third (number 4 in its title) was on the life and work
of Elisha Mitchell. The fourth discusses the work of Joseph Caldwell
and David Swain. The fifth was mainly on William Hooper. The sixth
describes the early faculty, especially James Phillips. The seventh,
eighth, and ninth were on Swain; the seventh is critical, the
eighth complimentary, and the ninth discusses the marriage of
Swain's daughter. The tenth is on William Mercer Green. The eleventh
gives the history of the University Magazine. The twelfth
describes the role of the college tutors. The thirteenth tells
of several ante-bellum faculty members. The fourteenth is on UNC's
ballroom. The fifteenth discusses Chapel Hill's doctors, and the
sixteenth discusses the town's business growth. The seventeenth
and last one is on Benjamin Hedrick.
