THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL: A HISTORICAL BIBLIOGRAPHY

Compiled by David B. Parker

Revised by Edward L. Harrelson
July 1992

PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION

This bibliography contains citations to over six hundred items pertaining to the history of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (or to the University of North Carolina, as the Chapel Hill campus was known until 1963). Excluded are items of a purely contemporary nature-those on subjects of current interest that contain no history. While items of this nature might be useful to researchers, they are not listed here for reasons of space. A general index to the citations appears at the end of the bibliography.

This bibliography supersedes "The History of the University of North Carolina as Found in University Magazine, Alumni Review, and University Record" (June 1988). Supplements will be issued from time to time and will include new items as they appear as well as older items that come to the attention of the compiler.

Most of the items in this bibliography can be found in the North Carolina Collection (NCC) in Wilson Library of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The staff of the NCC has been very helpful in the compilation of this bibliography and is always eager to help researchers in any aspect of North Carolina history.

The NCC has two useful research tools that are not listed here. One is an extensive collection of newspaper clippings divided into three series: general North Carolina, North Carolina biographical, and the University of North Carolina. The other is an "Index to Biographies," a card file that contains the names of thousands of North Carolinians, many with University connections. This index is keyed to the accompanying "Bibliography of Volumes Indexed for Biographical Information," which lists nearly five hundred volumes. Also, the Daily Tar Heel has recently begun an index; a copy is available at the NCC.

Compilation of this bibliography was sponsored by the Historical Publications Subcommittee of the University's Bicentennial Policy Committee. John L. Sanders gave direction to this bibliography and suggested a number of entries. Susan Dunn helped prepare the final manuscript.

PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION

The second edition of this bibliography adds 135 entries to David B. Parker's original 667 entries and supersedes his "Historical Bibliography" of March, 1989. Most of the new items were published from 1989 to 1992. There are some additions, usually addresses, published before 1989 which were not included in the first edition.

While all of the items have to do with The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, some are more relevant than others. The newer items include several articles about alumni, and there are also brochures which have some history of campus organizations. Manuscripts usually have not been included, although there are two collections of papers, one dealing with the Speaker Ban Law and the other consisting of Anti-War Materials, which have been included. The papers of many alumni and professors may easily be found in the Southern Historical Collection in Wilson Library. Most of the new items were taken from the BIS system, the University's on-line cataloging system.

I am very grateful to the North Carolina Collection staff. They are a devoted group of people and are always very helpful. Thanks are also due to Susan Dunn who helped with the manuscript.
