According to author William Snider's "Light on the Hill: A History of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill," the first Federal soldiers, or "bluejackets" as Snider calls them, reached Chapel Hill and the University.

According to historian Stephen B. Weeks, Federal soldiers entered and took possession of the village of Chapel Hill on this date.
