University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
April
9,
1874
A committee consisting of Walter L. Steele, Paul C. Cameron, and William L. Saunders visited the University, which had been closed since 1871, to study the condition of the vacant buildings. Reporting on April 9, Steele commented that he would never "forget the sadness that overpowered [him] when [his] eyes fell for the first time upon the ruined spot" of campus.Top |
