In a resolution passed during a reunion at the University, the Class of 1888 suggested that the Building Committee name the new women's building for Cornelia Phillips Spencer, an advocate for reopening the University during the early 1870s. Spencer was also the first woman to receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from a southern institution.Top |
