June 27, 1953
William Chambers Coker died at his home in Chapel Hill. An 1894 graduate of the University of South Carolina, Coker left a career in banking to pursue his Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins University. He came to Chapel Hill in 1902 as professor of botany.
