University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Joseph Caldwell was born in Lamington, New Jersey. Caldwell served as presiding professor, which was the chief administrative position prior to the creation of the office of president, from 1796 to 1797 and 1799 to 1804. In 1804, he became the first university president, serving from 1804 to 1812 and 1816 to 1835. He and his wife, Helen, are buried on McCorkle Place, where visitors can view a monument erected in his honor.
