This Day in the History of the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Robert Hett Chapman, who was selected as president by the Board of Trustees on December 12, 1812, resigned as president of the University and returned to the Presbyterian ministry. While in Chapel Hill, he instituted Bible study for students and helped to establish a local church.
Joseph Caldwell was elected president (again) of the University after Robert Hett Chapman's resignation. Caldwell previously served as presiding professor and president from 1796 to 1797 and 1799 to 1812.
