July 20, 1822
Charles Phillips was born in Harlem, New York. An 1841 graduate of the University, Phillips returned to serve as a mathematics professor, and he was chairman of the faculty from 1875 to 1876.

The cornerstone of Old West was laid. Completed and occupied in July 1823, the building lies parallel to Old East--the oldest public university building in the nation.
