John Manning, professor of law from 1881 to 1899, was born near Edenton. An 1850 graduate of the University, Manning filled the vacancy created by the death of former law professor William Horn Battle. During Manning's tenure the law school's enrollment increased from seven students in 1881 to eighty-seven in 1897. Manning died February 12, 1899. The former home of the University's law school, Manning Hall, was named for him.Top |
