University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Solomon Pool was born at Elmwood, the Pool Family plantation on the Pasquotank River near Elizabeth City. Serving as University president from 1869 to 1871, he faced declining student enrollment and decreasing state support, which eventually caused the University to close its doors in 1871.
