This Day in the History of the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
George Tayloe Winston was born in Bertie County, North Carolina. He entered the University at the age of 14, but left in 1868 due to declining enrollment and the University's increasing economic problems. After attending the United States Naval Academy and Cornell University, he returned to Chapel Hill in 1875 to accept the position of adjunct professor of Latin and German. In 1891, after the resignation of Kemp Plummer Battle, Winston was elected president, serving in this position until 1896.
