Governor William W. Holden and the Reconstruction-era Board of Trustees removed David Lowry Swain from his position as president.
David Lowry Swain died after being thrown from his buggy on August 11. Previously a state representative and governor of North Carolina, Swain served as president from 1835 to 1868.
