This Day in the History of the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Learning of the North Carolina General Assembly's passage of a bill to reopen the University, Cornelia Phillips Spencer gathered a group of villagers and went to South Building to ring the bell in celebration.
The University held a formal reopening celebration, though the actual opening day was Monday, September 6, 1875. University historian Kemp Plummer Battle proclaimed "FRANCIS DONNELL WINSTON [as] the Hinton James of 1875" (the first student to arrive at the reopening of the University).
