President Edward Kidder Graham proposed a structure to enhance student life--"a student union a student club house building large enough to center and contain religious, social, and general student activities for the whole college."

Mary Lily Kenan Flagler Bingham died in Louisville, Kentucky. In her will she left the University a sizable bequest, which would eventually be used to create the Kenan Professorships Fund.

The will of Mary Lily Kenan Flagler Bingham was probated in West Palm Beach, Florida. Item eight of the will established the Kenan Professorships.
