A fire broke out in the chemical storage room in Venable Hall, damaging the building and equipment.

Albert Coates, founder and first director of the Institute of Government (now School of Government), married Gladys Hall, a native of Portsmouth, Virginia. The couple immediately immersed themselves in the life of the University and community, he through his position as professor of law and she through civic and cultural organizations. In 1985, the couple co-authored the 435-page "The Story of Student Government in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill."

Calvin Coolidge attended the football game between the Tar Heels and the University of Virginia, making him the first sitting president to attend a college football game in the South. UNC defeated the Cavaliers 24-20 in Charlottesville.
