The men's basketball team defeated the University of Tulsa 59-55 in the NCAA South Regional championship game. The win allowed the University to participate in its NCAA-record 15th Final Four (as of 2003).

The University held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Frank Porter Graham Student Union renovation and expansion.

Competing in the first athletic event of the inaugural Carlyle Cup contest, the University’s field hockey team defeated Duke University’s squad to take a 1.5 point lead.

The University held a convocation ceremony for Chancellor James Moeser.
