About the Currently Received Newspapers Database
The Serials Information Services newspaper
database is for print and microform newspapers currently received by Davis Library, House Undergraduate Library, the North Carolina Collection, and Park
Library. The Davis Serials Desk (or the Reference or Circulation desks) can answer many questions about the Library's print and microform newspaper
subscriptions.
There are over 140 hard copy newspapers currently received by the Library. These newspapers come in 11 languages and from
16 countries. Using the
search page, you will be able to find these newspapers by country of origin, language, or library
location. Some newspapers may be found by searching by city or state of publication. Information returned includes title, origin, handling of back
issues, retention information, and call number. There are also links on each page to the news section of the
Article Databases and More page and to the newspaper section of the
Electronic Journal Finder, where one can find electronic versions of many
of these titles and, of course, many additional newspapers.
The Library's newspaper collection in general (including non-current titles)
may be explored with the aid of this
guide from the Davis Reference Department.
For questions on current newspapers, contact Serials Information Services (962-2050), Davis Reference (962-1151) or Circulation (962-1053).
About the Newspaper Collection
Current newspapers, as well as periodicals, journals, and magazines are housed
in the J. Charles Morrow III Room on the first floor of Davis Library. This
area, also known as the Davis Periodicals Reading Room, is located immediately
to your right as you enter Davis Library.
The Periodicals Reading Room is home to the Serials Information Desk and the
Current Newspapers Area. Popular titles, including several important
newspapers, are kept at the Serials Information Desk. Sample desk titles
include major national and state newspapers like the New York Times,
News & Observer, and Washington Post. These papers may be checked out for
Reading Room use with a valid ID during
Serials Desk hours.
The Current Newspapers Area houses newspapers from across the country and around
the globe. Titles in the Newspaper area are available at all hours that the
building is open. Many of them are kept for a limited period and then replaced
with a permanent microform copy, which is shelved in the Microforms Collection
at the rear of the second floor mezzanine. Others are routed to a permanent
home in specialized collections, such as the North Carolina Collection.
The North Carolina Collection houses a great many North Carolina newspapers.
Some of the important ones, however, are kept in Davis Periodicals Reading Room or in the Undergraduate Library, for a limited period when they first
arrive, and are later sent to the NCC. Search this database to find out the retention and routing schedule for all currently received newspapers.
