Circulation Policies
Borrowing Privileges:F. Stuart Chapin, Jr. Planning Library is part of UNC—Chapel Hill's Academic Affairs Library system and is open to all eligible borrowers at UNC and cooperating schools. UNC affiliates must use their UNC One Card to check materials out of the library, and local residents and alumni without One Cards should obtain a Library Borrower's Card from the Davis Library Circulation Department.
Non-UNC affiliates, such as Duke or NCSU students, must register at either Davis Library, the Health Sciences Library, or the Law Library in order to check out materials.
Loan Period: For Regular Circulating Materials
Undergraduates and unaffiliated borrowers — 30 days
UNC Graduate Students — 90 days
UNC Faculty — 180 days
Due dates are stamped on the inside of each book at the time of checkout.
RenewalsLibrary materials may be renewed unless needed by another borrower. Borrowers may also renew items online on the Academic Affairs Library's Webpage www.lib.unc.edu under "Books and More" in the main menu or the "My Account" icon.
Overdue NoticesLibrary patrons are expected to return or renew items by the due date that is stamped on the date due slip at the time of checkout. The Library sends overdue notices as a courtesy. Failure to receive a notice or receiving notices late does not absolve the borrower from responsibility to return material or to pay overdue fines.
Holds and Recalls:A hold or personal reserve may be placed on items which are checked out from the Planning Library. All circulating materials are subject to recall after the initial two weeks of use or immediately if needed for library reserve. These materials are held at the circulation desk upon their return and the requestor is notified. You may use this online form to recall a book that is currently checked out of the Planning Library.
Traces:When a book cannot be located in the standard places, a trace may be requested. The library user will be notified of the results.
FinesMinimum daily fines are $0.50 per day per item. Maximum fines are $15.00 per item. Fines for reserve materials are $1.00 per hour or fraction thereof per item.
Replacement Charges:Library users are responsible for the materials that they have borrowed and will be fined for their loss. Books are automatically declared lost when they are 42 days past due. LOST FEES: Minimum of $100 ($75 Replacement Fee and $25 Processing Fee). Materials returned after being declared lost will be assessed the maximum fines.
Reserve MaterialsReserve books, articles, and personal copies are selected and placed on reserve by faculty teaching courses in the Department of City and Regional Planning. These materials circulate for two hours. They must be checked out using a UNC One Card, TRLN card, or Library Borrower's Card. Reserve readings may be checked out overnight two hours before the library closes and must be returned within the first hour that the library is open the next business day. Fines for overdue reserve materials will accrue at the rate of $1.00 per hour per item.
Reference Materials and PeriodicalsAlthough these materials do not circulate, they may be checked out for up to two hours for photocopying.
