107.2 FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC PERIODICALS PRICE INDEX FOR CANADA 1994, Keith Guyitt
107.3 SWETS REPORT ON RECEIPT OF 1994 SUBSCRIPTION PRICES, Han Nouwen
Marcia Tuttle, tuttle@gibbs.oit.unc.edu.
A few weeks ago the newsletter began getting about five new subscribers a day. I was delighted but mystified. Then I remembered that Marilyn Geller had posted her latest issue of _Citations for Serial Literature_ on serialst. That issue gave the contents of two recent pricing newsletters, as well as instructions on how to subscribe. That publicity had to be the reason for so many new newsletter subscribers. More recently, Birdie MacLennan posted the Serialst Purpose and Scope, which mentions this publication. Several more new newsletter subscribers!
In return, I'd like to give both Birdie and Marilyn a plug. Discussion of any matters having to do with library serials and serials librarianship are appropriate for Serialst and its about 1,500 international recipients. To subscribe, send a message to either listserv@uvmvm.bitnet or listserv@uvmvm.uvm.edu, and say: subscribe serialst [your name].
Because CSL is newer and not as well known, here is a little more information about it:
CITATIONS FOR SERIAL LITERATURE was created in February 1992 with a threefold purpose: to identify literature related to the serial information chain, to disseminate this information in a timely manner, and to create an index in this field with electronic searching capabilities. To achieve these goals, CITATIONS FOR SERIAL LITERATURE publishes table of contents, and abstracts when they are available, for a variety of journals which address issues of concern to serials librarians, vendors and publishers. Complete table of contents are included for the following titles:
Advances in Serials Management
NASIG Newsletter
Newsletter on Serials Pricing Issues
Serials: The Journal of the United Kingdom Serials Group
Serials Review
In addition, selective tables of contents are included for the following titles:
Issues in Science and Technology Librarianship
Library Acquisitions: Practice and Theory
CITATIONS FOR SERIAL LITERATURE is an electronic index which publishes the table of contents and abstracts, when available, for articles related to the serials information chain. It is NOT an electronic discussion list. All complete and selective table of contents materials in CITATIONS FOR SERIAL LITERATURE are reproduced with the permission of the original publisher. The section of this index entitled "Serendipitous citings" includes relevant citations from journals not generally listed here. These citations are contributed by users.
It is the intention of the editor to expand the number of
journals included in this database. Editors and publishers
interested in participating in this project should contact the
editor at sercites@mitvma.mit.edu or mgeller@mit.edu to discuss
the possibility. To subscribe, send a message to LISTSERV@MITVMA
or LISTSERV@MITVMA.MIT.EDU that reads: subscribe SERCITES

INDEX FOR CANADA 1994
Keith Guyitt, Faxon Canada, keith@faxon.ca.
For the fourth consecutive year, Faxon Canada and the School of
Library and Information Science, University of Western Ontario,
London, Ontario, Canada, are working together to produce a
periodical price index. The 1994 index is presently in
preparation. The first two indexes were published in the
_Canadian Library Journal_. The third index appeared in the
_Canadian Journal of Information and Library Science_. The
articles have been authored by students in the Master of Library
and Information Science program at the School. The raw data is
supplied from the Faxon Canada serials database.
Preliminary figures from the 1994 Index data were made available
for fiscal planning to Faxon Canada clients.
Prices for 1994 subscriptions ordered by Canadian libraries rose
10.52%, increasing the average cost of one subscription in
Canadian dollars from $332.13 to $367.07. Mathematics and
Computer Science titles showed the greatest increase (13.79%) of
all journals ordered.
A review of overall increases in the subscription costs of titles
published by country showed the following results:

SUBSCRIPTION PRICES
Han Nouwen, Swets Subscription Services,

In October last year we gave details of the receipt times of
major publishers' 1994 price lists as they stood at that time. We
now have a final picture of the situation at January for our
largest 278 publishers (turnover 50,000 US Dollars each). Receipt
dates were as follows:
With regard to price increases for 1994 our records showed that,
based on all prices received by January 1994, the publishers'
price increases for 6 of the main publishing countries were:

From Elliott Lieb, Princeton University,
lieb@math.Princeton.EDU:
Librarians might be interested to know what can be done pricewise
if there are serious editors and serious publishers who are
determined to keep prices down.
International Press (Hong Kong, Cambridge Mass) just came out
with a math journal called MRL (Math Research Letters). It will
have six issues per year (about 120 pages/issue so far). Cost:
$85 to individuals, $130 to libraries per year.
Note also that they allow authors to keep copyright. This is
stated on the front cover. They also give 50 free reprints. There
are no page charges.

From Timothy Cullen, Blackwell Publishers Journals Marketing
Coordinator:
I want to alert serials librarians to a recent publishing change
in _Microcomputers in Civil Engineering_ (ISSN: 0885-9507).
It had been announced last fall by Elsevier that the journal
would merge with another journal and be published in 1994 as
_Advances in Engineering Software_.
This is not the case. Volume 9, 1994 of _Microcomputers in Civil
Engineering_ will be published in 6 issues.

Publishers in Cambridge, MA at 1-800-835-6770 or by fax at (617)
