The voluminous Percy manuscripts and printed materials at the University of North Carolina are housed largely by format in the Manuscripts Department and the Rare Book Collection of Wilson Library.

The Library began to receive the first of these materials in 1981, when Walker Percy agreed to place his papers on deposit in the Southern Historical Collection, now part of the Manuscripts Department. The bulk of the papers arrived in several installments during the 1980s. The papers remaining in the Percy home, as well as formal ownership of the entire collection, were transferred to UNC during the years immediately following the author's death in 1990. Finally, to fill out the collection and complement the manuscript holdings, the Library acquired the author's substantial working library from the Percy family in 1999.
