The disaggregate data can be downloaded from this site in three different versions:
(i) the original data from U.S. Census, 1972-1988, which is further disaggregated by port of entry and mode of transport
(ii) the processed data that sums across U.S. ports and modes of transport, 1972-2001
(iii) the processed data described in (ii), but available as SAS or STATA files.
Data from 1980-1997 are available on CD in Davis Reference - in this format it may be easier to use
This site provides a searchable database on international trade in merchandise and commercial services. The data are presented according to the product definitions and regional groupings specified in the technical notes.

The data are price and quantity indexes and values for U.S. international trade, 1879 to 1923, from Robert E. Lipsey, Price and Quantity Trends in the Foreign Trade of the United States, Princeton University Press, 1963. The aggregate indexes and some product breakdowns are shown in the original volume and in U.S. Bureau of the Census, Historical Statistics of the United States, Colonial Times to 1970, Washington, D.C., 1975. What are presented here are more disaggregated data from the same original source
Contains U.S. merchandise exports, imports, trade balances and
state and regional exports of merchandise. Data included is from 1989- and can be exported into excel.
