Census of Governments
"The U.S. Census Bureau conducts a Census of Governments of all state and local government organization units every 5 years, for years ending in 2 and 7, as required by law under Title 13, U.S. Code, Section 161... The census covers three major subject fields - government organization, public employment, and government finance." Publications include Government Organization, Popularly Elected Officials, Individual State Descriptions, Government Employment (local, state, and federal levels), Employment of Major Local Governments, Compendium of Public Employment, and Government Finances. Data files include Public Use Files on Government Organization. Most recent two Censuses will be presented in American FactFinder starting in 2013 or 2014.
Governments Integrated Directory (U.S.)
This directory contains name, unique identification code, and other reference information about all local governments and dependent school systems in the United States, as enumerated for the 1997 Census of Governments. It contains files for independent governments: county, municipal, and township governments, special districts and school districts. Files for dependent elementary-secondary school systems include state and local systems as well as education service agencies. The GID is the master list of all governments in the United States, and is used in the Census Bureau's government statistical programs.
Public Employment and Payroll (U.S.)
This site provides results of the annual survey of government employment, which measures the number of government civilian employees and their gross payrolls for one month. Data is available from 1992-present. Separate files are provided for federal government, state government, state and local government, and local government. Also provided are these 2002 publications: Employment of major local governments, Compendium of public employment, and the Government finance and employment classification manual.
