CQ Voting and Elections Collection
CQ Voting and Elections Collection provides detailed voting data for the study of American politics, both past and present. Presidential, Senatorial, Congressional, and Gubernatorial candidates are covered, as are campaigns and elections, political parties, and voters and demographics. Data can be downloaded and manipulated to cover an individual's career, seat competition, party control, and party switches, among other aspects of American politics. The Collection also includes an encyclopedia, a calendar and chronology, and definitions and sources of the data. For data, use the "Export/Download" link at left. Data include:
  • Presidential General Election, All States, Summary from 1789 to present, with popular vote beginning in 1824
  • Presidential General Election, All Counties from 1920 to present
  • Gubernatorial General Elections, All States, Summary from 1824 to present
  • Gubernatorial General Elections, All Counties from 1968 to present
  • House General Elections, All States, Summary from 1856 to present.

Includes voter registration, voter turnout, election results by county and precinct, campaign finance data
Voter Registration and Election Results Data
FTP site for downloading latest ten years of data. Read the README text file toward the bottom of the list to figure out which files you need. Variables include name, address, demographic information, party affiliation, place of birth, and date of original registration within the state, among others. The Record of American Democracy, 1984-1990 (ROAD)
"Our Record Of American Democracy (ROAD) data include election returns, socioeconomic summaries, and demographic measures of the American public at unusually low levels of geographic aggregation. The NSF-supported ROAD project covers every state in the country from 1984 through 1990 (including some off-year elections).
Voting and Registration
"Information on reported voting and registration by various demographic and socioeconomic characteristics is collected for the nation in November of congressional and presidential election years in the Current Population Survey (CPS). Detailed information from recent surveys and historical trends in selected areas is listed below. Estimates and projections of voting-age population derived from administrative records and Census 2000 are also provided.
