County and City Data Books - (University of Virginia)
A supplement to the Statistical Abstract of the United States, County and City Data Book provides statistics on a variety of social and economic areas including: Demographics, Health, Crime, Education, Income, Poverty, Housing, Labor Force, Earnings, Farming, Manufacturing, Wholesale and Retail Trade, Taxable Service Industries, State and Local Government, Voting. This resource provides access to the 1944 through 2000 County and City Data Books. Users can create custom printouts and/or customized data subsets (subsets only available for 1988-2000).

Historical Statistics of the United States: Millennial Edition
"Historical Statistics of the United States presents the numerical history of the United States. Historical Statistics of the United States: Millennial Edition
IPUMS
"The Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS) consists of thirty-eight high-precision samples of the American population drawn from fifteen federal censuses and from the American Community Surveys of 2000-2004. The thirty-eight samples, which draw on every surviving census from 1850-2000, collectively comprise our richest source of quantitative information on long-term changes in the American population. The IPUMS assigns uniform codes across all the samples and brings relevant documentation into a coherent form to facilitate analysis of social and economic change." Users choose years and variables of interest and download data with SPSS, SAS, or Stata set up files. Registration is required.
Log Into North Carolina (LINC)
"The most valuable Web resource for NC statistical data." Over 1300 data items, most are available for all 100 counties. Historical data and projections, 1960s to 2030. Interactive custom queries and preformatted county reports. Broad topic areas include: Population and Housing; Vital Statistics and Health; Social and Human Services; Law Enforcement, Courts, and Corrections; Environment, Recreation, and Resources; Energy and Utilities; Government; Employment and Income; Business and Industry; Agriculture; Transportation.
National Historical Geographic Information System (NHGIS)
“The National Historical Geographic Information System (NHGIS) is a project to create and freely disseminate a database incorporating all available aggregate census information for the United States between 1790 and 2000.” The project is still in development, but aggregate data and shape files are available for download from a beta version Data Access System. Free registration is required.

Highlights include:
  • Data from ICPSR Study 0003, 1790 – 1970 US, States, and Counties
  • Census Tract data from 1910 forward
  • 1970 Counts 1, 2, 3, 4H and 4P. Some 4P variables are broken down by black, white, Hispanic origin. This is not available on Geolytics CensusCD 1970.
  • 1990 SF4 data for States, Counties, PMSAs, and Places over 2,500 pop. (1990 SF 4 is not available on Factfinder)
