"Adherents.com is a growing collection of over 41,000 adherent statistics and religious geography citations -- references to published membership/adherent statistics and congregation statistics for over 4,200 religions, churches, denominations, religious bodies, faith groups, tribes, cultures, movements, ultimate concerns, etc.
The project, supported by the Lilly endowment, permits searching of survey questions, analyzing results to construct charts and graphs, mapping results, finding data sets, and retrieving reports based on geographic variables.
"...there are few sources of comprehensive data on church membership and religious affiliation for the United States. Perhaps the leading organization to address this gap is the Glenmary Research Center, which publishes Religious Congregations and Membership in the United States, 2000. The following series of county-level choropleth maps, which reveals the distribution of the larger and more regionally concentrated church bodies, draws on this resource. The maps are in GIF format.
Among the reports emanating from this ongoing study are ones assessing parental and family relationships factored with the presence of religion in the family, religion and risk behaviors, religion and self image, and life attitudes
