There are a number of ways to save or move the files you create at the scanning stations in Davis Reference.
In general, save your work temporarily to the computer's D: drive. You can create your own directory on the D: drive. Once your files are saved, you can:
- Save them to a floppy disk if they are small enough.
- E-mail them as attachments to yourself or others using a web-based e-mail account. UNC-affiliated patrons might wish to use UNC's webmail client for this.
- Burn them to CD or DVD. Use the Create CD or Intervideo WinDVD Creator utility for this. Both can be found in the Utilities folder available from the Start Button. If you have never done this before, the CD Burning page of this guide includes step-by-step instructions for CD burning, with illustrations.
- Save them to a USB or flash drive. USB ports are easily available on the front of each computer. If your drive will not fit into the slot, there is an extender cable available for checkout from the Davis Reference desk that will fix this, or you can use the USB ports in the back of the computer.
- Use the AFS Client to save them on your University AFS space (your "H: drive"). Please read the separate AFS documentation for further help. Only UNC-affiliated patrons will have access to University AFS space.
- Use the FTP client to transfer them to another computer on which you have an account. UNC-affiliated patrons can FTP files to Isis.unc.edu. Please read the separate FTP documentation for further help.
After your files are successfully saved, you are free to delete them from the D: drive if you wish. Do not delete them until you are certain you have successfully saved or moved them to the desired location.
Please do not peek at or delete other users' files. This is a violation of the honor code.
If you leave your files on the D: drive, there is no guarantee that they will still be there the next time you visit.
It is our policy to delete files older than 2 months. They are deleted from scanning station hard drives through an automated process based on the time of their last save. Library staff reserves the right to remove a user's files manually if hard drive space is needed for other users. In this case, older and especially large files will be deleted first.
What file format do I use?
It depends. If you are scanning images that are important to you, see Preserving Your Photos for the Long Term.Common mistakes include
- Saving photographic images as bitmaps (.bmp) or GIFs (.gif)
- Saving images you intend to put on a Web page as .psd or .tiff. These formats are too large and meant for long-term preservation.
- Saving images of a document (like an article) as a jpeg - PDF is the standard for documents.
- Saving and renaming JPEGs multiple times - Important! JPEG quality degrades with each save.
- Saving a still image from a digital video clip as an .avi - Saving as a JPEG does not require use of a media player.
