Scanning Stations 2 and 3 feature Fujitsu fi-4220Cdj flatbed scanners, with page feeders, also called ADFs (automatic document feeders). Fast and convenient, these are ideal for quick scanning jobs.

Instructions for Scanning Station 1, the UMAX scanner

  • Open scanner lid. Place image face down on glass.

  • Items may be placed anywhere on glass, but it will be easier to trim and edit the image, if placed in the front left-hand corner.
  • Or, for multiple-page scans, use the page feeder. Insert page face-down, upside-down.
  • Open Photoshop CS. The icon below appears on the desktop.
  • Go to File > Import > FUJITSU fi-4220Cdj.

FUJITSU fi-4220Cdj option not there? This means the computer does not recognize the scanner connection. Make sure scanner's green light indicates it is on. Then, re-boot the computer, and try again. The FUJITSU fi-4220Cdj option should appear. When the scanner is visible, it should appear in Import menu (shown below).
  • The TWAIN Driver window appears.

IMPORTANT! The settings in the TWAIN Driver window should look similar to, or exactly, like this.
Confirm that the settings (including "Setting Files", "Resolution," "Scan Type," "Paper Size," and "Image Mode" are the same as those in the picture below.

  • Check scanner function setting
Make sure it displays Function 1 (shown below). If it shows any other number, a user probably pressed a button, re-set, or adjusted scanner settings, or that the power was disconnected. If so, you will need to re-boot, so that the computer can recognize the scanner.
  • Under Resolution pull down to select a resolution, and under Scan Type pull down to choose Flatbed or ADF (for document feeder), as needed.
  • Select Preview.

The following box pops up with the preview in progress.

Now your image appears in the TWAIN window.

In the TWAIN window, drag a square around the image preview to select the area to scan.
  • Select Scan.
  • The image appears behind the TWAIN window inside Photoshop, as shown below.

Success! Click Close button in the pop-up window.
  • View image in Photoshop, edit image (if desired).
  • Is the image too big? Too small?

Look at the top of the image frame in Photoshop. Note the default file name: Untitled-1 @ 16.7%. Remember, what you see scanned into Photoshop is a representation of the image.

This is not the actual size of the image. It is only a view of the image.

The image is shown as 16.7% of its actual size. You may wish to view the image at 100%--in other words, adjust it to its real on-screen size--and then adjust the dimensions, so that your image is a smaller size. This is handy for pictures you would like to post to a Web page.
