Scanning Station 1 features one UMAX PowerLook 2100XL flatbed scanner, with slide and film scanning accessories.
The accessories are available to check out from the Reference Desk. Further instructions on slide and photo negative scanning are on pages 63 and 68, respectively. Users who have not scanned slides or photos before are encouraged to read the instructions in this handbook prior to consulting Reference Desk staff.
The UMAX is slower than the Fujitsu, and recommended for detailed, fragile, large, or non-standard sized items.

Considering a TIFF?
For high-quality artwork used in dissertations and manuscripts, you may wish to consider saving a TIFF file (.tiff ) as a back-up, high-quality copy and a second copy as a .jpg for use in your Word document. Generally, it is not good practice to use TIFFs in everyday Word documents and on Web sites. They are much too large and can be time-consuming to download.Furthermore...
E-mailing TIFFs can be a recipe for disasterBecause of enormous file sizes, sending .tiffs via e-mail, especially to friends who have Web-based email accounts with account limits (Yahoo! Mail, MSN Hotmail), is not a good idea. For sharing digitized photos and graphics with friends and family via e-mail, it is better practice to use a smaller file, a .jpeg for photos and .gif for graphics.
