Scanning stations

Self-service scanning is available in the Davis Library Research & Instructional Services Department.  3 stations are available to all, and 5 are reserved for UNC-Chapel Hill students, faculty, and staff.  

At these stations, shown on the map below, you can scan images and documents or scan to text using optical character recognition (OCR) software.  All have DVD and CD burners.  Users agree to Scanner Policies when using these stations.

Which Scanner Should I Use?
Map shows location of scanner stations in Davis Library Research & Instructional Services Department.	There is a group of five scanners for UNC students and faculty in the Northwest corner of the Davis Library Research & Instructional Services Department computing area.  This is to your left as you walk into Davis and past the elevators. There is also a row of four scanners for the general public in an alcove in the Northwest corner of the Research & Instructional Services Department Department public computers.	One of these stations is equipped with JAWS and a set of headphones.  Ask a librarian for more details.

Hardware

  • 1 Epson Expression 10000XL flatbed scanner (for scanning large documents, up to 12.2 by 17.2 inches)
  • 1 Fujitsu fi-6230 flatbed scanner, with page feeder
  • 1 Fujitsu fi-4220C flatbed scanner, with page feeder
  • 5 Fujitsu fi-5220C flatbed scanners, with page feeder
  • 1 KIC overhead walk-up scanner

Black & white and color printing are available from all scanner PCs, at standard printing rates.

Software

  • ABBYY FineReader 9
    This OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software scans documents and reproduces plain text. The resulting text can then be saved as a .txt file or in Word. On station 2 only.
  • Adobe Creative Suite CS3, including Photoshop (on stations 1 and 4-8)
  • Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional (on all scanners)
  • Irfanview (for scanning images, on stations 2 and 3 only)

Assistance

Research & Instructional Services Staff members are on hand to answer basic questions and advise during regular Reference Desk hours. Feel free to call the Reference Desk at 962-1151 to make an appointment with a librarian, if you have special needs and would like a consultation. Please note that scanning stations are self-service. While staff can provide help and introductory training, staff is not able to complete scanning work for you.

Reservations

Reservations are not available for scanning stations. Use is limited to 1 hour if others are waiting.

Undergraduate Library Design Lab, Room 130
PCs and Macs
Large format flatbed, slide, negative and document feeder scanners
Hours, must have valid UNC ONYEN or valid ID from Duke, Central, or State to use.

SILS Library and Computer Classroom, Room 117
Outer lab area has 8 PCs and 1 HP ScanJet 8200 USB Scanner. Computer classroom features 32 PCs, 6 HP ScanJet 8200 USB Scanners, 6 HP 5470 CSE Scanners, and 1 HP ScanJet 8250 for larger scan needs, all with OCR software installed. There are also 10 Quickcam Pro 3000 webcams for video conferencing and local video capture.
