Historic districts are overlay zones established in the Unified Development Ordinance for the purposes of protecting historic resources. The overlay zones are applied by the governing bodies at the same time a historic preservation plan is adopted. Upon designation of an area as a historic district, any exterior building change requires review by the Durham Historic Preservation Commission and the issuance of a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA). The Commission uses the reveiw criteria in the adopted Plan and can approve a COA indicating that the proposed change is in keeping with the historic character of the area. The data set displays the geographic areas of Durham City and County subject to the historic district zoning overlay. |
