Abstract: "SAMAB is a consortium of federal and state agencies working in partnership to promote ecosystem management and sustainable development in Southern Appalachian Regional Biosphere Reserve. Current membership includes: the US Forest Service, the US Environmental Protection Agency, the Tennessee Valley Authority, the National Park Service, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the US Geological Survey, the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the National Biological Service, the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Appalachian Regional Commission, the Economic Development Administration, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the States of Tennessee, Georgia, and North Carolina." The Southern Appalachian Assessment (SAA) has been a cooperative effort by the SAMAB partners to assess the ecological condition of the Southern Appalachian region. Geographic information system (GIS) technology and data played a vital role in the assessment process. This database was assembled with primarily publicly available data from Federal and State agencies. Primary data sources were the US Bureau of the Census' Census of Population and Housing and that agency's Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (TIGER) files, the US Department of Commerce's County Business Patterns, the US Department of Commerce's Census of Agriculture, the US Department of Labor, the US Department of Agriculture's Forest Service Impact for Planning Model (IMPLAN), and the US Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service. Many local sources were used to describe schools, highways, and other social characteristics. This database includes spatial data, geocoded statistical files and other statistical files. Examples of data included are: Fish population statistics, utility lines, potential black bear habitat, soil type and tree diseases. The summary and technical reports of the SAA can be found on SAMAB's Southern Appalachian Home Page at <http://samab.org/> along with many additional data sources.
