Abstract:

"ESRI Data & Maps contains many types of map data at many scales of geography. The data is provided in shapefile and MrSID image formats and can be read directly from the CDROMs. CDROM 2 contains an HTML-based help system with information about the data including redistribution rights and metadata documentation. Please check this information before redistributing any of this data. Each data set includes a metadata document providing complete documentation. Each shapefile includes an ArcView 3 legend file (.avl) which ArcView 3 automatically opens when the shapefile is added to a view, providing symbols and classifications for the theme. Each shapefile includes a projection file. The projection file stores the coordinate system information for the shapefile. The file is used by ArcGIS and the ArcView 3 Projection Utility. Each data set includes an ArcGIS layer file (.lyr). It provides symbols and classifications for the data set when viewed in ArcGIS. The data is organized on seven CDROMs. CDROM 1 contains data for the World and Europe. ArcEurope Base Map and Demographic are included and available on CDROM 1. CDROM 2 contains data for Canada, Mexico, and the United States, as well as a World Topography and Bathymetry image. Data for the United States is continued on CDROM 3. Very detailed data for the regions of the United States is split between the west on CDROM 4, the east on CDROM 5, and the south on CDROM 6. CDROM 6 also contains image data for the World and North America. StreetMap data resides on CDROM 7. The data is useful for general-purpose basemaps and for more specific uses. The data can make a new user productive and the software useful as soon as it is installed. For each geography included, the significant basemap layers are boundaries, cities, rivers, and roads. This generalized basemap information is available for the World, Canada, Mexico, the United States, and Europe. In addition, where possible, demographic data is provided for subnational boundaries such as states, counties or their equivalents." (Source: Disk 2, helpaboutedm.htm).
