Abstract: "The Earth releases its constantly building tension in the form of natural hazards. The same natural processes that are responsible for the Earth's tremendous beauty and variety can have negative consequences, however, when human populations and infrastructure are in the way. Although the most direct danger befalls people in the immediate vicinity of natural disasters, their harmful effects can...often be felt throughout the world. In addition, the potentially disastrous effects of earthquakes, volcanoes, storms, and other natural hazards may be magnified as populations grow and economies become more interdependent. Not only will those who are directly "in harms way" be at risk, but so may be many others around the world who depend on the connections between themselves and the people who are directly at risk. HAZPAC is a Geographic Information System (GIS) project designed to help a broad range of people visualize the socioeconomic connections and shared vulnerabilities of burgeoning communities in the Circum-Pacific region. The HAZPAC interactive platform displays a variety of environmental, social, and economic factors that connect natural hazards to social and economic globalization." (CD-ROM case)
